Overview

Royal Farms needed a redesigned mobile experience for iOS and Android that would allow users to view their rewards and punch cards, locate stores, manage their accounts, and play a card matching game.

After the mobile apps were delivered, they approached us to design the in-store kiosk experience.

My Role

I led the design and strategy initiatives for this project, guiding a team of UX and visual designers in the creation and execution of the deliverables in this case study.

Process

Discovery: A UX audit was conducted to evaluate the current mobile apps to understand and evaluate the experience. Interviews and workshops were then conducted to detail the desired features, functionality, and business rules that would impact our designs. Once this was completed, user stories and acceptance criteria were defined.

Design: Comprehensive wireframes and visual designs were created through a paired design process. These designs were tested with Royal Farms customers through in-person, moderated sessions.

Annotations: The designs were fully annotated, detailing all of the interactions in the experience, to gain client acceptance and provide detailed documentation for developer handoff.

User Stories & Acceptance Criteria

This project began with a discovery phase that included stakeholder interviews, an audit of the existing mobile apps, and requirements definition. I created user stories and acceptance criteria that detailed the full scope of functionality to be conveyed through the designs.

Wireframes & Design

Once the requirements and user stories had been defined, I led a team of designers through the wireframe and design process. Fully clickable wireframes were created and approved by the client before moving into the visual design phase.

User Testing

We conducted in-person, moderated user testing at various stages of the design process to gather user feedback and make adjustments in direction.

Annotations

The final designs were fully annotated using Confluence. This allowed detailed descriptions of each screen to be attached to every user story that our developers were tasked with in Jira while building the applications.

Kiosk Experience

After we delivered the iOS and Android mobile apps to the client, they asked us to design their in-store kiosk experience for ordering food. This work began with workflows detailing the overall experience, along with the interactions for each category of food and product on offer.

Once the workflows were mapped for all of the options in the kiosk, designs were produced and validated via in-store user interviews.

Results

I led a team of designers through an end-to-end design process to create a redesigned mobile application for Royal Farms on iOS and Android devices. Once the work was completed, we were brought back on to design their in-store ordering kiosk platform.
